Stand face-to-face with the Great Pyramid of Khufu — built 4,500 years ago and still the most awe-inspiring structure on Earth. No photograph prepares you for this moment.
The Giza Plateau is home to some of the most recognisable monuments in human history — all within a short drive of Cairo.
The largest and oldest of the three Giza pyramids, standing 138 metres tall. Built around 2560 BCE and constructed from over 2.3 million stone blocks. Enter the internal chambers and feel 4,500 years of history close in around you.
The world's largest monolithic statue — a limestone lion with a human face, 73 metres long and 20 metres high. Carved from a single ridge of bedrock, it has guarded the plateau for over 4,500 years. The Sphinx is most magical at sunrise or in the evening light.
One of the best-preserved Old Kingdom temples in Egypt. Built from massive granite and alabaster blocks, this was where the mummification rites of Pharaoh Khafre were performed before his burial in the second pyramid above.
The second pyramid of Khafre retains its original white limestone casing at the top — a glimpse of how all three pyramids once gleamed. The smaller pyramid of Menkaure is surrounded by three smaller queens' pyramids.
Just 30 minutes south, the Step Pyramid of Djoser at Saqqara is Egypt's oldest stone structure (c.2650 BCE), designed by the legendary architect Imhotep. The surrounding necropolis contains beautifully painted mastaba tombs.
For the classic photograph of all three pyramids in alignment, visit the desert panorama viewpoint south of the plateau. Camel rides are available here — an unforgettable perspective on one of humanity's greatest achievements.
Daily 8am–5pm (4pm in winter). Arrive early — the plateau is most magical in the morning light and crowds are thinner before 9am.
